Euro debt crisis lures Middle East hotel investors

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

Opportunities for Middle East investors in core Western European markets will come into focus at the annual Arabian Hotel Investment Conference 2012 (AHIC), which takes place in Dubai, on 28-30 April at Madinat Jumeirah.

“Europe’s worsening debt crisis will tempt investors from oil-exporting Gulf states, flush with petrodollars, to broaden their search for potential bargains, as Europe’s capital markets dry up. Credit conditions are extremely tight, banks are struggling to raise enough cash to cover their own liabilities let alone lending to others,” commented Richard Thompson, Editor, MEED

“This is naturally leading to an increase of distressed real estate assets in Europe and in the case of hotels, many offer yields that outperform other property investments and are coming to market well below their peak market values, as prices remain subdued,” added Thompson.

A good example of that was the recent purchase of the prestigious Carlton Hotel in Cannes on the French Riviera, which was sold for EUR 450 million to Qatar-based investor Ghanim Bin Saad Al Saad.

That figure was significantly lower than the EUR 634 million that Morgan Stanley paid for the Carlton in 2006. the Qatar investor is also interested in other properties of the InterContinental chain including those in Vienna, Frankfurt, Budapest, Rome, Amsterdam and Madrid.

Speakers at this year’s AHIC event discussing investment opportunities outside the Middle East include H.E. Enrique Meyer, Minister of Tourism, Argentina; Tarik Senhaji, Chief Executive Officer, Moroccan Fund for Tourism Development and Kevin Wallace, General Manager, Hospitality Investment and Development Dutco Group and President and CEO, Jebel Ali International Hotels.

Other Middle Eastern investors have also made the headlines recently with a raft of high profile hotel acquisitions in London and Paris.

In the last two months alone, Qatar National Hotels Company (QNH) snapped up Le Royal Monceau – Raffles Paris, while late last year Middle East investors spent some $500 million buying luxury hotels the Sanderson, St Martins Lane and the W Hotel, in London.

Global hotel transaction volumes will hold steady in 2012 to reach upwards of US $30 billion in deals according to recent figures released by Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels, in line with 2011 figures, which were up 13% from 2010.

Hotel investment activity is expected to remain stable across EMEA this year with $11 billion worth of deals expected, similar to 2011 levels, the real estate services company said. London and Paris will remain the primary drivers for investment activity, it added.

“The increasing focus on hotel acquisitions is the latest in a series of Gulf-wide investments in European assets,” commented Kevin Wallace.

Outside the hospitality sector, Qatar’s investment portfolio includes luxury department store Harrods, and stakes in Barclays and the London Stock Exchange. elsewhere in the Gulf, Abu Dhabi’s flagship carrier Etihad Airways recently raised its stake in Air Berlin to nearly 30% as it continues its aggressive expansion plan. One of Abu Dhabi’s most high profile European acquisitions remains Manchester City Football Club.

Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman Dubai Airports and Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline & Group, organiser MEED Events in partnership with Bench Events has put together a three-day programme designed to explore the outlook for hotel investment in the Middle East’s changing landscape.

The Middle East reported positive results in the three key occupancy performance measurements in 2011 despite the Arab Spring, according to industry consultants STR Global, although performances in individual countries differed greatly.

Occupancy rose by 3% to 62.3%, revenue per available room (RevPar) increased by 4.1% to US$125.66 while average daily rates increased 1.1% to US$201.66.

Staying with the Arab Spring theme, AHIC will also hold sessions focusing on individual case studies. Samih Sawiris Chairman, Orascom Development Holding, will examine the issues facing Egypt, while other key industry figures will address the challenges of developing and operating in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.

The Sunrise room has a distinct variance; with the window slightly open, the tranquil sounds of the main garden water fountain drifts upwards with a soothing sound. Bunny Hollow Inn, located at 901 West Dallas Street, offers its guests three rooms, each with a private bath and cable TV. The Bed and Breakfast offers four rooms at this time; Sunrise Room, Sunset Room, Lake View and Edge Water. We stayed in the Elizabeth's Suite. Martha's Vineyard Guest House, located at 962 Martha's Vineyard Lane, offers five bedrooms, each with a private entrance. The historic Heritage Harbour House Bed and Breakfast offers a quiet retreat for couples and families visiting the island. Based on our experiences as proprietors of a successful bed and breakfast, I would recommend it as a business if you and/or your partner like to clean, cook and keep things organized. Do you like llamas? The rooms are designed in a contemporary English fashion. Sheep and New Zealand are often used in the same sentence.

A date with David

Inspired by the marble masterpieces of Florence, Gabriella le Breton tries her hand at sculpting.

How to tackle Florence, a city with such a wealth of art that visitors run the risk of succumbing to “Stendhal syndrome”, named after the French writer who was left sick and dizzy by the volume of art he saw during a visit in 1817?

I’m keen to avoid becoming similarly overwhelmed, so I’ve arrived in the cradle of the Renaissance with a plan. On this trip I’ll concentrate on the city’s sculptural treasures, in part inspired by the Hotel Savoy, a bastion of Florentine hospitality since 1893. It’s working with the Galleria Romanelli, a long-established sculptor’s studio, to offer guests the chance to join a two-day sculpture course during their visit.

What better city to admire the work of the world’s finest sculptors – Donatello, Michelangelo, Giambologna and others – and then gain an insight into their genius with some hands-on sculpting?

Advertisement: Story continues below

After checking into the Savoy, I walk from Piazza della Repubblica, the city’s former Roman forum, to the city’s Oltrarno quarter. the name – “across the Arno” – reflects its location on the left bank of the river that bisects the city and is an area that has become synonymous with the artists, antiquarians and jewellers whose workshops and galleries line its streets.

Sculptor Pasquale Romanelli acquired his “studio” here in the mid-19th century, a deconsecrated church prized for its towering ceilings, which allowed for the creation of large sculptures. as I discover on entering the Galleria Romanelli, it still houses sculptural masterpieces five generations later – marble statues, whimsical bronze cherubs, monumental friezes – in the hands of Folco Romanelli and his children, Raffaello and Rubina.

Raffaello, dapper in tweed jacket and loafers and with faultless English, ushers me into a small workshop alongside the gallery – we need to capitalise on the afternoon light. Marble, of course, is the medium to which most sculptors aspire and students can progress to stone after a few lessons with Raffaello, though novices start with something “easier”. But even eyeing the lump of clay Raffaello has laid out for me, I’m unnerved by the prospect of shaping anything worthy from it.

Raffaello is charming and humble but I know he is an acclaimed sculptor, commissioned to create busts of wealthy Florentines, royals, celebrities and international dignitaries. the fact he’s asking me to replicate the work of the world’s greatest sculptor does little to quell my nerves: my task is to copy the lips and chin of Michelangelo’s David.

The clay is cool and smooth to touch and my inclination is to pummel it into submission but Raffaello advises calmly: “Keep stepping several paces away from your work and look at both objects from different angles.” despite being a keen (if infrequent) painter, I find the creation of a three-dimensional object a real challenge.

“Look at how shadows and light define shapes, rather than looking for lines and curves where you expect them to be,” Raffaello says. I find myself looking at each of the contours of David’s full, sensuous lips in a new light and, as I grow braver in building up my “sculpture”, it starts to take shape.

We pack up for the night and, leaving the studio, I walk past the candlelit wine bars and restaurants of Oltrarno, cross the Ponte Vecchio and stroll along the cobbled via Por Santa Maria towards the Hotel Savoy. In doing so, I am literally walking in the footsteps of sculptors such as Michelangelo and Donatello, for whom I now have an even greater respect. Having spent an afternoon creating a poor replica of David’s lips out of soft, yielding clay, the task of carving his five-metre-tall body out of unforgiving marble is barely conceivable.

The next morning, on the recommendation of the omniscient Savoy concierge, Ruggero Vannini, I meet Maria Rosa Canale, a city guide with 30 years’ experience under her Ferragamo belt. as I explain my wish to focus on sculpture, Canale nods and we’re off.

While she provides a fascinating commentary on the history of Florence and its sculptors, we admire the austere beauty of the church of Orsanmichele, graced with 14 statues of the patron saints of Florence’s craft and trade guilds, created by the finest sculptors of their day, including Donatello. there is more outdoor sculpture in nearby Piazza della Signoria, where I peer up at Cellini’s bronze Perseus and the replica of Michelangelo’s David to see the lips with which I’m now so familiar.

In the Basilica di Santa Croce, we marvel at the imposing tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, Rossini and others. Canale has to drag me away from the exquisite Madonna in Donatello’s delicate Annunciation, a magical combination in gilded “pietra serena” (local grey stone) of the poised, timid Virgin and six mischievous cherubs playing on top of the altarpiece.

Moving on, we reach the Bargello, one of Florence’s oldest buildings and a former prison, which now houses many of the world’s finest sculptures. Michelangelo’s louche Bacchus and handsome Brutus keep company with Donatello’s precocious bronze David. the vaulted, frescoed arches of the inner courtyard shelter Vincenzo Gemito’s innocent Pescatore (Fisherman), while bronze animals from the grotto of the Medici villa of Castello line the staircases.

After a restorative plate of pasta, Canale ushers me to the Basilica di San Lorenzo to see Michelangelo’s extraordinary Laurentian library and staircase – architectural pieces so beautiful they warrant the title of sculpture. and then, perhaps Florence’s sculptural non plus ultra: the new Sacristy in the Cappelle Medicee (Medici chapels). Michelangelo never finished the sacristy but its simple, geometric architecture provides the perfect backdrop for those statues he did complete, particularly his hauntingly powerful allegories of day and night, dawn and dusk.

Canale takes her leave as I approach sculptural saturation point, suggesting I clear my head with a stroll in the 16th-century Boboli Gardens, full of panoramic views, open meadows, grand avenues, grottos, fountains and thickly planted groves named ragnaie (spiders’ lanes).

Staying true to the Medicis’ wish for the gardens to be an outdoor museum, the Boboli Gardens are dotted with Roman antiquities and sculptures from artists spanning three centuries, including Stoldo Lorenzi’s dramatic fountain of Neptune (affectionately known as the Fountain of the Fork). Standing in the Grotto Grande, I discover another Michelangelo foursome, the replicas of his unfinished, roughly hewn Prisoners peering from the gloom.

I leave the gardens just in time to watch the sun cast its last rays on Giotto’s slender campanile. I’ll return tomorrow morning to the Galleria Romanelli for my second class with Raffaello, during which I’m due to “graduate” to a copy of David’s foot. hopefully inspired rather than defeated, I’ll visit the Galleria dell’Accademia to spend time with the real David and Prisoners.

After lunch at the Mercato Centrale, where I’ll pick up some truffles to take home, I’ll spend the afternoon in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo admiring Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise (the bronze doors for the Florence Baptistery) and another of Michelangelo’s Pieta sculptures, supposedly intended for his own tomb.

So much sculpture but still so much more to see. I’m already consoling myself with the thought that you should always leave something unexplored, keeping something to return for.

Mixing Medicare and mudslinging

1329906008 83 Mixing Medicare and mudslinging

Don’t look now, but the 2012 election is turning into a nationalreferendum on what to do about Medicare.

Democrats want to run on the issue — and to charge thatRepublican proposals to change Medicare into a voucher-based systemwould end the current guarantee of virtually unlimited healthcarefor the elderly.

The chairman of their House campaign committee, Rep. SteveIsrael, D-N.Y., has told candidates to stress three issues:”Medicare, Medicare and Medicare.”

At least some Republicans — such as Rep. Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis.,author of a leading GOP Medicare proposal — say they welcome thatfight. “Medicare is the issue,” Ryan told reporters last week.

Ryan believes Republicans can only lose if they play defense andallow Democrats to “scare seniors.” Instead, he argues that if theparty spells out its ideas clearly, it can win a mandate totransform Medicare from a government-run plan to one run mostly byinsurance companies.

That means voters may face a choice this fall not only over whoshould be president but also over how Medicare, the biggest driverof the federal deficit, should cut its costs: through governmentjawboning and regulation (the method prescribed by PresidentObama’s healthcare reform law) or via free-market pressure appliedthrough insurance companies (Ryan’s prescription, endorsed by theGOP presidential candidates). in simplified terms, Ryan’s planissues every senior citizen a voucher to buy a private insurancepolicy and relies on insurance companies to keep costs down. Lastmonth he added a new element: the option of retaining old-fashionedMedicare. But the system would still rely on competition to keepbasic costs below the value of the voucher, which would rise withina limit set by Congress.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., has signed on to cosponsor Ryan’s latestscheme, but most Democrats reject it, charging that it would shiftmuch of the burden of rising costs onto the elderly.

In his budget proposal last week, Obama suggested cuts of about$300 billion in Medicare spending over the next 10 years, but saidthey should be borne mostly by drug companies and other providers.and he called for strengthening the new Independent PaymentAdvisory Board, a federal panel that is supposed to make healthcarespending more efficient but is barred from recommendingrestrictions in benefits.

“What I will not support are efforts to turn Medicare into avoucher,” the president said, planting his feet in opposition tothe Ryan-Wyden plan.

And there, in a nutshell, is the problem: A heated, polarizedelection campaign isn’t the best forum to debate complex, competingproposals for bringing down health-care costs.

Presidential and congressional candidates aren’t likely to lookfor ways to combine the best of each approach. Instead, they’reheading into their ideological corners. There’s a lot of merit inthe Ryan-Wyden proposal. “It’s a good compromise,” notes AliceRivlin, an early proponent of Medicare vouchers and the formerdirector of the Office of Management and Budget under PresidentClinton. “It preserves traditional Medicare; it gives people moreoptions. But now that the Republican presidential candidates haveendorsed it, the Democrats feel they have to reject it.”

There’s a lot of merit in Obama’s advisory board too.Republicans denounce it as an unelected board of 15 that woulddictate healthcare decisions, but that’s not true; the healthcarelaw limited its influence over medical practices, and Congressretained the right to overrule the board’s recommendations.

“These plans will have bad results only if you implement thembadly,” Rivlin said. “There’s no reason to assume the worstoutcomes.”

Which is no doubt what both sides will do. Last week Mitt Romneyattacked Obama for failing to “take any meaningful steps towardsolving our entitlement crisis,” even though the health-care actdoes just that. he also slammed Obama as “the only president inmodern history to cut Medicare benefits,” even though Romney’sproposals cut benefits too.

There’s a shred of good news buried in this shrill debate: Bothsides agree that Medicare’s costs need to be reined in. many onboth sides support raising the eligibility age and increasing thecost of Medicare for affluent users.

Both sides recognize that Medicare spends billions of dollarswastefully and that some mechanism must be found to end that waste. Most Americans, however, still don’t think Medicare needs to be cutat all. in a National Journal poll released last week, 80 percentsaid just that.

It would be a great service if the presidential candidates ofboth major parties disabused voters of that notion and helped themfocus on the real choices we face. But don’t hold your breath.

In the end, unless one party wins big and takes both halves ofCongress as well as the White House, there won’t be a very clearmandate at all — and the difficult work of Medicare reform couldbe even harder than before.

Dog dilemma forced couple into caravan

1329901217 28 Dog dilemma forced couple into caravan

A COUPLE were forced to live in a caravan for more than a year after the council couldn’t rehome them because of their pet pooch.

But St Keyne couple Brian Leslie, 58, and his wife Sandra, 53, say they can now finally look to the future after a charity help set them up in a bungalow.

  1. Sandra and Brian Leslie on their wedding day three years ago.

They were given a deposit and a month’s rent by the Royal British Legion and almost £1,000 by Ideal Homes for Heroes to get them on their way.

The had been living in a tiny, badly insulated caravan in Whitsand Bay because the council refused to rehouse them unless they gave up their dog.

Mrs Leslie has little short-term memory, suffers from panic attacks and endured depression while in the caravan.

Aimee Gee, from ABF the Soldiers’ Charity, said: “They were unexpectedly turned out of the house they had rented for seven years and couldn’t afford anywhere else.

“They found the local council unhelpful and eventually found military charities could help as Brian had served with the Scots Guards from 1972 to 1984.”

Mrs Leslie had a stroke so living in a caravan was hard for her, and mr Leslie was suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder from his time in Northern Ireland.

“It has been really difficult for us over the last couple of years but things are looking up,” he said.

Mr Leslie thought military charities only helped those injured as a result of service.

“I’m quite proud and don’t like to ask for help unless I really need it but if I had known about the help available I would have accessed it sooner,” he said.

Mrs Leslie is unable to work following a stroke caused by complications from a hysterectomy, so the couple relied on mr Leslie’s NVQ assessor wage.

The couple said they approached the council but only qualified for help if they sold their furniture and their patterdale terrier, Benji, who they said was like a child to them.

The couple were told they had to stay in a B&B, possibly separately, for up to six months. Disabled access was not guaranteed and they would have to leave each day.

They dismissed the council’s offer as unacceptable and instead moved into their caravan, paying £300 per month at a holiday park with no direct water supply.

The Citizens’ Advice Bureau suggested military charities could help and the couple found a bungalow in St Keyne through Graham Wright Estate Agents in Liskeard.

Shortly after moving in, mr Leslie secured a job managing the Bay Side Bar and Grill in Seaton.

He said: “Living in a bungalow is perfect for Sandra and we have a spare room for visitors and a nice garden for Benji to run around in.

“Thank you to the charities and Wright’s estate agents.”

A spokeswoman for Cornwall Council said it used a range of emergency accommodation including regularly inspected B&Bs.

“We will always try to accommodate dogs, but not all emergency accommodation providers permit this,” she said.

The council aims to make decisions within 33 working days and uses B&Bs as temporary accommodation in emergencies.

And the Oscar goes to…

1329896440 45 And the Oscar goes to…Published on Februar 9, 2012 by PR-Gateway   ·   no Comments

Wer trägt was?

Unprecedented Paris shambles hard to fathom

1329895232 84 Unprecedented Paris shambles hard to fathomThe Irish Times – Wednesday, February 15, 2012

FROM THE BLINDSIDE: Even at the humblest level of the game you never got to the point where a game was cancelled with the teams ready in the dressingroom, writes ALAN QUINLAN

SATURDAY NIGHT in Paris was a situation completely out of the ordinary. Even going back to the days of club rugby, I’ve never come across a situation where you’re in the dressingroom stripped and ready to go when the game has been called off.

The Irish and French players had their preparation done, taken all the carbohydrate drinks, eaten all the right food, got themselves into game-time mode. To be left high and dry like that just minutes from kick-off just wouldn’t happen even at the lowest level of the game.

Even in the days when I was playing with Clanwilliam you never got to the point where a game was cancelled with the teams in the dressingroom.

Games went by the wayside for the weather several times but it was usually done with a couple of days to spare. now, there’s a good chance this was occasionally done so that fellas could be free to enjoy their Saturday nights safe in the knowledge there’d be no game on the Sunday morning but the principle still stands. you don’t put people out if it can be avoided at all.

For players, it’s an odd place to find yourself in. I wasn’t a bit surprised to hear Jamie Heaslip say to Imanol Harinordoquy while they were standing on the pitch that he’d see him later for a drink.

Since long before any of us had laces in our boots, that’s what rugby players have done. Game’s off? Where’s the bar? That’s as sure as night follows day.

I was in the Ireland squad in 2001, the year the Six Nations got broken up by the foot-and-mouth crisis. in fact I was in the team. We’d won our first two matches, beating Italy away and France at Lansdowne Road and we were all set for the Wales game.

We were based in the Glenview Hotel in Wicklow and although there was talk that this foot-and-mouth thing might cause problems, we were all full sure they wouldn’t call off a Six Nations game because of it.

The team was announced on the Tuesday around 5.30 and I was delighted to find out I’d kept my place from the first two games. It was my first Six Nations campaign and I was enjoying it and doing well. we all went back to our rooms to kill a bit of time before dinner but, within the hour, we all got called back down to the team room.

Warren Gatland and Brian O’Brien were there and they told us the game had been called off and there was no date set for it to be played. and then the magic words – we were going to be released out of camp the next morning.

Everybody took a minute or two to process this, to deal with the shock of the game being called off. Warren and Brian went through the details of when we’d meet up again for training. Then there was a near stampede to the door as everyone went to their rooms to get their gladrags on and we were in Dublin city centre with pints in front of us before 7.30.

The night ended with Peter Stringer driving seven or eight of us home in Mick Galwey’s car in the small hours, with the team masseur Willie Bennett in the boot because that was the only place there was room for him. Every once in a while, we’d bang on the back seat to check on Willie and as long as the bang came back, we knew he was alright.

You don’t always have that sort of leeway though. I remember a Munster game being called off a couple of years ago in the Heineken Cup away to Montauban. we went to the south of France on the Friday for a Saturday game but found ourselves in the middle of a hurricane over there. we still thought the game would probably go ahead when we had the captain’s run but that night the weather was ferocious.

I was rooming with Ronan O’Gara and neither of us got much sleep with all the noise from outside. Trees were being pulled up in the howling wind and you could hear all sorts of things clattering and crashing around the place.

We had the TV news on in the room and there were reports of accidents happening all over the area and people being hurt. we knew there was a chance the game would be called off but it wasn’t until after breakfast that we found out it was gone for sure.

This time, there was no mention of the bar because, unlike the Six Nations, the Heineken Cup has contingency plans for this sort of thing. If it’s possible at all, they get the game played on the following day.

That still left us with a day to kill that we hadn’t been expecting. What do you do when you have nothing to do? It can be hard to fill the time.

Somebody very quickly organised a school gym somewhere in Montauban where we could go and have a game of indoor soccer, partly to get the nervous energy out of our bodies but mostly just to have a bit of fun and kill the boredom for a while. The game went ahead the next day and nobody was too put out.

But killing time can be hard. It changed a bit over the years because as video analysis became a bigger part of the game, there was always some bit of film you could be viewing. but you had to have your down-time too and after a while, there’s only so much TV you can watch or so many books you can read.

I was always more of a sleeper than a reader, mind you. If I had a chance at all, I’d be back in bed with the covers over me and I had no trouble dozing off during the day. some guys couldn’t do it at all and they’d be bored out of their minds and looking for things to entertain them. some played cards a fair bit but I stayed well away from that.

I got the sense they’d have been delighted to get me involved but somehow I don’t think it was for my company.

Sometimes your surroundings will help you out. When we were staying in the CityWest hotel with Ireland, the golf course was right on our doorstep so we could go and happily kill a few hours there.

Anthony Foley was mad for playing golf whenever he could and, funny enough, he used play with Eddie O’Sullivan a lot. John Hayes always said it was no wonder Foley always kept his place on the team.

You’d go stir crazy if you didn’t find something to do so it was only natural your more childish side would come out from time to time. I once had a room in CityWest that turned out to be just overlooking the first tee. When Hayes found this out, he got very excited. He went straight down to bagman Paddy “Rala” O’Reilly’s room to get the blowhorn we used for training.

He was like a little kid at the window waiting for Foley to tee off. Axel was halfway through his backswing when Hayes blew the horn and ball went skittering along the ground. Hayes actually became so pleased with himself he stayed there for an hour, blowhorning any random golfer who stepped up to the tee. so if you were playing in CityWest back around the early 2000s and you’ve always wondered who yer man with the blowhorn was, now you know.

It mightn’t sound like the most high-minded carry-on to be getting up to but that’s what the life is like a lot of the time. you train and you play and those are the times you live for. but when you’re in camp or you’re away from home, a lot of the time you’re just doing nothing.

Scott Gibbs said that long days in hotels were the one thing he didn’t miss when he retired and I can totally relate to that. I hope the Ireland and France players enjoyed their night out on Saturday – the way the fixture list is looking, they mightn’t be seeing one another for a while yet.

PS on a sad note, I was very sorry to hear of the death of John Flanagan on Saturday night in Paris. John and his wife Irene have been following Munster and Ireland far and wide for years and a lot of the players would know them very well. John had a heart attack in the Stade de France just as he was taking his seat. It’s awful news and I’d like to send my condolences and best wishes.

Nation & World

1329894020 93 Nation & WorldJERUSALEM —

Israeli TV anchorman turned politician Yair Lapid broke his silence Thursday, making his first public speaking appearance since he quit hosting a top-rated weekend news show last month and formed a political party.

Speaking at a business conference in the southern Israeli city of Eilat, Lapid lashed out against a wide range of ills he said were plaguing the country – from political corruption to the disproportionate power of business tycoons to ultra-Orthodox Jews who don’t serve in the military.

He attacked those who “live on our expense” and railed against a “rotten” political system that has become a “corrupt game” in which Israelis are extorted by sectorial parties who represent those who don’t work and don’t serve in the military.

“The Palestinians don’t need to battle us,” Lapid said. “They can make a cup of coffee, light a cigarette and wait 12 years and the Zionist country will crumble from within.”

Lapid’s entry into politics has created a huge buzz in Israel and energized opposition to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. the son of Joseph Lapid – a former newspaper columnist and TV personality who also started his own party and went on to become justice minister – Lapid is one of Israel’s most recognizable faces and brings a rare star quality to Israeli politics.

Elections are currently set for late 2013. But in Israel’s parliamentary system, governments rarely serve their full terms, and analysts believe elections could take place this year.

Polls show Lapid’s new party – which has no name – could win as many as 15 seats in the 120-seat parliament and eventually become the second largest party in the country, trailing only Netanyahu’s Likud.

Little is known about Lapid’s views when it comes to regional politics. But in his columns and television commentaries he portrays himself as a reasonable and pragmatic common man, patriotic yet critical of the government and sympathetic to social issues.

Such views could make him attractive to centrist Israelis and he is expected to primarily take votes away from the centrist opposition Kadima party, which has recently seen its support plunge in opinion polls.

The Main House has a washer and dryer available for guest use also. Guests will also enjoy the located on the premises. The Texas Piney Woods offers visitors the opportunity to step back into history, into the era of the Republic of Texas with the many historical attractions located throughout this area. Just a wee boat ride takes you to this ancient structure. Sarah Wilcox is the Innkeeper and Lickety Split is the Official Greeter. The inn offers thirteen fantastically appointed rooms that are furnished with period antiques. They also may be in quieter neighborhoods than hotels. Ostuni is also a haven for sea lovers.
